The comments that this book is "poorly written" are poorly written. The book is written as if spoken from the point of view 17-year old. The complaints about the language, violence, and vulgarity overlook the fact that the Vietnam conflict was all those things. This book (and the glorification of war) should absolutely scare the sh*t out of everyone who reads it. If people would be as outraged about death and destruction as they are about profanity the world would be a safer, saner place. To quote School Library Journal: "This is a compelling, graphic, necessarily gruesome, and wholly plausible novel."
