Of course, typing is handy but really it’s as simple as noticing things.” -Walt Longmire With this thought in mind, Sheriff Longmire goes undercover through an unofficial request by the Sheriff of neighboring Campbell County, WY to follow up on some facts that just don’t line up in a man’s death and barn fire that caused the deaths of beloved prize horses. The dead man’s wife, Mary, is the main crime suspect but there are factual inconsistencies in her statement and the time line that keep gnawing at the sheriff. His undercover efforts are suspected early on by a hotel maid/criminal justice community college student, one of many unexpected “dark horse” reveals in this story. In this novel, Craig Johnson again treats us to his wordsmith skills. Here are just a few choice ones: “Her eyebrow cocked like a revolver,” “…she squeezed a worm of topical antibiotic onto her index finger.” In your mind’s eye, you can immediately picture the image. The many turns of phrase in this tale keep the listener poised for the next gem to drop from the author’s mind. The twists and turns this tale takes will keep you riveted to the very end. Take this story along on your travels this season The reader, George Guidall, brings it home again in this Longmire mystery. His rich vocalizations add a sense of home, suspense, and urgency when the action in Absaroka County heats up. It’s the holidays! Time to reconnect with family and friends. The Longmire Mystery series feels like both. Craig Johnson keeps the stories from this series fresh by introducing new characters, new locales, new situations, and by throwing in cameo visits from favorite characters in past stories.
