A big JoJo fan, I turned to reading some older novels while waiting for the next big one. This one is different because it's historical, so you don't get the gripping moral dilemmas that she is known for in her recent work. This earlier style of writing is not as honed as the shorter, raw honesty she narrates with today, although Sister Frances is a fledgling wallflower to her stronger, later characters. Based on historical facts and accounts of young brides being rejoined with their servicemen husbands, JoJo respects chronological events of the end of the war as well as portrayal of the differing realities some of these couples faced. Most haunting are the telegrams received with the simple wording, Not Wanted. Don't Come. How such devastation can be conveyed in four short words. JoJo brilliantly explores the lives and the feelings many of these very young women faced.
