Tuesdays With Morrie

An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson
Apr 16, 2020TEENREVIEWCREW rated this title 3 out of 5 stars
We can carry ourselves down the sidewalk, wash our hands and faces, and sleep without wondering if the night would be our last, speak without choking because our lungs are in the middle of a slow, painful collapse. Amidst the fluctuating paces of life, it’s easy to forget these small blessings. Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is a short yet powerful book, a soft and truthful perspective on death. Morrie Schwartz is a respected sociology professor in his seventies at Brandeis University in the city of Waltham, Massachusetts. However, at this ripe age, he receives the dreaded death sentence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Mitch Albom, the narrator, is a quintessential American man, living as a busy journalist in Detroit, Michigan. He values efficiency, time, and money over tender emotions and deep relationships. He cares too much about what others think, to let emotions show through clearly. In a way, life has killed him. Through his aged professor, death makes him live again. The two gather every Tuesday to work on Mitch’s final thesis together: on life. As Morrie slowly departs from earthly life, the readers will be able to feel the waves of warmth he sends out into the world. 5 stars out of 5 @StarRead of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is a memoir of the author’s relationship with his former sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz. When Mitch was in university, he had a favourite sociology professor: Morrie. Morrie was more of a mentor and friend than a professor to his students, and would crack jokes, dance in the middle of a lecture, and offer his best advice. The last time Mitch spoke with Morrie was on his graduation day. Many years later, while Mitch is working as a sport columnist, he finds out that Morrie is suffering from a fatal illness and decides to rekindle the relationship that they had during his university years. Morrie was now going to teach Mitch his last class: life. For the next few months on every Tuesday, Morrie gives Mitch a lesson about life that he’s learned in all his years. Tuesdays with Morrie is a beautiful memoir that teaches everyone how to live life to their fullest and with enjoyment. Morrie advises how to perceive the biggest milestones of one’s life and become satisfied with it as a whole. I rate this book ⅗ stars and recommend it to readers ages 10+. @ilovefood of The Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board
