Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, and the Mercury Theater. Welles never quite lived up to his early promise, and must have been very difficult to work with. But his staging of Julius Caesar as a mirror of contemporary Fascist politics was certainly a modernist coup which helped galvanize attention towards the rising horrors of totalitarianism abroad. Another unsung Richard Linklater gem.
