Violet, Klaus and Sunny begin living with their Uncle, Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, who is a snake scientist. Uncle Monty, as they call him is a very nice man, giving them comfortable living arrangements and jobs they love to do, as they prepare for a trip to Peru.
Uncle Monty's assistant sudenly quits so a new assistant, Stefano is hired. Stefano is actually Count Olaf in disguise.
Count Olaf threatens the children with a knife to keep their mouth shut. Eventually he kills Uncle Monty, and plans to take the children with him to Peru. On the car ride, they get into a car accident with Mr.Poe.
They head back to the Montgomery estate after Mr.Poe learns of Montgomery's death.
A doctor which is the hook-handed man in disguise comes to examine Dr.Montgomery and claims that the cause of death was a bite from a deadly snake.
Violet and Klaus try to find out the real cause of death. Violet goes snooping into Olaf's suitcase and room and finds evidence that Olaf injected venom into Dr. Montgomery. Klaus reads a book and finds that death by the deadly snake always results in victims that turn blue by the constriction. Dr.Montgomery died with a very pale face.
Finally Mr. Poe believes the children but before the police arrive Olaf and his assistant take off.
