A sometimes bleak, sometimes entertaining look at the formation of the American punk scene in the 1970's. It's an oral history that casts a wide net, so you get to know the rivalries, feuds, the contradicting stories, and the excesses. It does for New York what the Decline of Western Civilization documentary does for LA.

Among my all-time favorites, Please Kill Me is a real-life fairy tale of drugs, excess and rage. This oral history chronicles the rise of the New York - based punk movement from its earliest roots with the MC5, the Velvets and Dolls through the Ramones and beyond. These stories - told by the men and women who changed the world of music and fashion forever - border on the fantastic.

If you're a fan of oral history and the interview format, even if you have no current interest in punk and New York in the 60s/70s, you'll love this collection of stories about the beginnings of an entire musical genre. The personalities interviewed and described in this book seem too eccentric to be real - in the best possible way.

A simply indispensable book about punk rock and it's milieu, if you ever vaguely thought that it mattered. And. Fascinating.

I keep coming upon references to this book. The format is so great - so many interesting personalities. Required reading for sure!

This book only proves that punk is not just an attitude, but a movement worthy of documentation. Highly recommended.
