Wow. I follow the illustrator of this book on Instagram and thought it sounded interesting. I was not prepared for the goodness--often wiping away tears, googling unknown-to-me animals, laughing, and gasping--reminding me there's always more to learn and be amazed by. Can't recommend it enough.

A short and charming memoir about the intellectual and emotional impact various animals have had on naturalist writer Sy Montgomery. Her deep love, respect, and openness to the creatures who share our world is inspiring and heartwarming. The illustrations are likewise charming and her suggested reading list is a welcome addition.

This woman loves, loves, loves animals. She goes to great lengths to immerse herself in them, familiar ones and unfamiliar ones. Her research on their emotional lives is very scientific but she tells about it as if is it a fairy tale. If you love, love, love animals this is the book (and author) for you.

"Sweet" is the right word -- which means it is not for everyone -- but many will like the stories.

I read this while visiting my grandmother, who has housed many dogs and cats throughout my life. It was the perfect setting to consume and relish in this book--her house was the house where I learned to be gentle and empathetic to creatures. This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves animals, no matter their shape. Sy Montgomery is correct on the notion that the animals we interact with help us to be come better creatures.

I loved this sweet memoir. Sy Montgomery is a naturalist and a prolific author of both adult and childrens work, and this autobiography focuses on fable-like lessons she learned from her different studies throughout the years. The critters featured in range from tree kangaroos to three different border collies, a 700lb pig, 3 octopodes and a tarantula with pink toes. Her relationships with her companion animals and those the likes of which she'd never interacted with before are touching and seem quite brave to readers less comfortable with the unknown. Montgomery's open, generous spirit is clear on every page. Her casual, sometimes confessional tone makes How to Be a Good Creature read like a conversation with an adventurous, kind friend.
