A series of baffling murders among a group of imprisoned agents threatens the outcome of World War II in this chilling mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Churchill's Secretary. World War II is raging, and former spy Maggie Hope knows too much. She knows what the British government is willing to do to keep its secrets. She knows the real location of the planned invasion of France. She knows who's lying. She knows who the double-crossers are. She knows exactly who is sending agents to their deaths. These are the reasons Maggie is isolated on a remote Scottish island, in a prison known as Killoch Castle, out of contact with friends and family. Then one of her fellow inmates drops dead in the middle of his after-dinner drink—and he's only the first. As victims fall one by one, Maggie will have to call upon all her wits and skills to escape—not just certain death . . . but certain murder. For what's the most important thing Maggie Hope knows? She must survive.

In my opinion, Maggie Hope is up there with Mary Russell. Susan Elia MacNeal captures the times with yet another mystery filled with twists and turns that leaves you wanting more and wondering where she will take Maggie next.

I have read none of the other Maggie Hope mysteries. I will need to add her to my list of novels to read. Following in the footsteps of Agatha Christie’s _And Then There Were None_. An author who used detailed research in preparation for a historical mystery has my admiration. Stuck in a Scottish castle with other British spies who have been deemed a threat to the British struggle in World War II, Maggie finds herself in a desperate search for a Nazi spy who is killing the “guests” one by one.

I listened to this book as an audio download. Not my favorite of this series.

I also received an ARC of this book, but was hugely disappointed. Yes, there is a mystery—two, in fact—though the only one explored is why the “prisoners” keep getting knocked off one by one. It’s hard to sympathize with such wooden characters.
The main mystery has absolutely nothing to do with the war—just a story about a disgusting lecher and his buddies despoiling young women. Though James Durgin plays a role here, there is no romance between him and Mags, either.
There are too many improbabilities and loose threads that require the reader to suspend disbelief. In the end, this book strikes me as mere “filler”—simply to stretch out the series and string along loyal readers. IMHO, you won’t miss a thing if you skip this one.

I received access to an advance electronic copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I have been a big fan of Susan Elia MacNeal and the Maggie Hope series for a while. This installment did not disappoint. Maggie is being held on an island off the coast of Scotland with fellow inmates who "know too much". Unfortunately, her stay on the island turns deadly for some of her fellow inmates. Once again, Maggie is put to the test using her incredible skills and grace to solve the mystery surrounding these deaths. Highly recommended for anyone who likes a great historical fiction mystery with a strong female lead.
