I picked this up hoping to find another book in the vein of How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan, and while I'm glad I checked it out, I have to say that many parts of this book are boring and uninspired. My advice: skip Lin's trip accounts and read the sections about the late Terence McKenna, a hugely influential psychonaut and ethnobotanist, and his ex-wife Kathleen Harrison, who runs the ethnobotany non-profit Botanical Dimensions and regularly lectures on psychoactive plants.

I desparately want to hate Tao Lin. He seems deplorable. And yet, he lets you into his inner monologue so easily that you just can't help but realize that every single body around you has a rich inner life.

This is a good account of one man's twist from deeply depressed to starting to recognize the beauty of the world around him.
