The book series that Bad News marks the end of- the Bad Magic series- and its predecessor, The Secret Series, were always my favorites as a kid. I loved the childish mystery that Bosch used, as it really excited me and made me believe in the world he created. I was devastated when I finally finished it, but I still believe it puts a fitting ending on what was a compelling, real, and hilarious narrative. Bad News focuses on a young and somewhat rebellious teenager named Clay at the magical Earth Ranch camp on Price Island. Right at the start, he is sent on a mission to explore The Keep, an obscure zoo established by the Midnight Sun- an amoral organization searching for immortality- that claims to house dragons. Clay and the camp supervisor (Mr.B) have reason to believe that Ariella, a dragon that Clay met and connected with the previous year, is being imprisoned there along with Cass, his brother’s friend who works alongside Earth Ranch and the Terces Society. To save them, Clay and a Terces Society member (Owen) are sent to the Keep disguised as blasé millionaires, but an unexpected emergency leaves Clay alone and unprepared. Bosch’s writing style may seem a bit childish or pedantic, but it gives the story a refreshingly youthful feel instead of seeming condescending or immature. In this way, the story and its iconic and quirky narrator let the reader imagine the events of the story vividly as if it were real. An element I especially love is Bosch’s use of footnotes and how in them he rambles on in the peculiar and nerdy character of Max-Earnest. It’s easy to laugh at and it gives mystery to his character. In total, I thought this book made for a fitting end to the storyline, and gave a full-circle finish- after all, at the beginning of the Secret Series Cass goes on a similar investigation in disguise and goes through similar situations. I was extremely sad to find that this was really the end of the series. I give this book 4.5/5 stars.      Elena of the Yorba Linda Teen Book Bloggers
