Alex kisses a girl and she likes it .Alex is 15 and one night blurts out to her family that she is gay. This is situation is made worse by the fact that she comes from a very faithful Mormon family. Alex's parents choose not to believe that Alex is gay but that she has been led astray by the girl she is involved with and that Alex can be cured of Lesbianism, like measles. Alex is sent away to a couple who say they can cure her. I don't know what kind of research her parents did that they chose this pair perhaps it was a money issue. In a desperate attempt to make their daughter "normal" They hand all rights of their underage daughter over to the abusers. This couple use her as their unpaid nanny/maid and in between chores beat her and abuse her emotionally.
It is a hard read for content but the book goes quickly. I like the fact that Alex is strong enough to rise above the mistreatment and fight to be herself. The fact that she forgives her parents is truly remarkable .

I had read the shortened version of this in Reader's Digest. I was raised Mormon and left the church in my late teens. I was interested to see what Alex Cooper had to say. The story was very disturbing. She was subjected to such torture and no one would help her for such a long time; she was virtually ignored by members of the church.

A harrowing memoir that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is hard to believe and unfortunate that this is a true story.
