Warning: introduction has a spoiler which will taint the the entire reading, and back cover also has a spoiler.

The defection of Sussex countryside is good, but characters are a bit light in development. Superintendent Meredith from Lewes constabulary is always going for the home run with whatever clues he has discovered thus far, unlike Christie and others who plant clues, maybe interpret some, but wait for the final telling. I liked the first novel "The Cornish Coast Mystery" better for plot and character development and it is that novel that got me interested in his work.
