This particular guide to southern baking is the brain-child of 3 best friends who at found each other when their careers had not yet come to fruition, who stayed friends when their various careers – fashion designer, chef and actress – took them to the far corners of the States. And they have remained best friends through this joint venture based in New York City – a venture that brought baked goods from the Deep South to Hell’s Kitchen.
Donna Bell’s Bake Shop is named after the mother of one of its founders, Pauley Perrette, famous for her role as Abby Scuito on television’s NCIS. Donna Bell Perrette was a southern gal with a huge heart who accepted Pauley’s two friends into her family and kitchen. After she passed away from breast cancer, the terrific trio named their dream after her, and her brand of warmth radiates from the shop – one of the only shops to remain open through 2 hurricanes that battered the city, and a shop that opens its doors on Thanksgiving to people in the neighborhood.
The stories peppered throughout the cookbook are as warm and friendly as the treats – but it is the recipes that will have you warming up your own kitchen for the rest of the winter: apple-filled sweet biscuits with homemade caramel sauce; maple walnut pie bars; Southern cherry chess bars (I have no idea what those are but holy buttermilk they sound tasty); Champagne cake with strawberry buttercream frosting. Heave the diet out the frosty window for a time and heave a sigh of pure enjoyment instead!
