Originally aired as a television mini-series, this all-star filmization of Stephen King's gripping epic of good versus evil chronicles the episodic adventures of a disparate group of people who struggle to reestablish civilization after a man-made catastrophe wipes out most of the world's population. The world abruptly ends when a deadly virus accidentally escapes from a government sponsored biological warfare laboratory. Soon people are dropping like flies from the plague.

The Stand is a decent enough miniseries adaptation of the source material. Considering that the original material is so obviously R rated, the idea that this PG version was able to get made is pretty incredible. Understandably, it suffers from terrible 90's era made-for-TV-and-VHS era special effects, but the overall story is conveyed in a respectable manner. Get ready to point out a ton of stars from the 80's and mid 90's if it's your first time seeing it.

I never watched the Golden Years, but the Langoliers is, well, another adaptation lacking in the special effects area. I never thought this was one of the better King adaptations, but apparently the book and the movie have a cult following among Stephen King fans.

I love this so much, I bought it. Yes the special effects are outdated - it's still a great movie. Love Gary Senise and Rob Lowe in this.

Turgid and way too long. Special effects now dated and the zombies are mostly laughable. Great depiction of how to manage Evil, though: Laugh at it.

I figured it would be hard to bring "The Stand" to the screen even in a mini-series. Although a lot of the studio work and effects are pretty hokey, and although I miss some of the points they took out, it kept most of the basic material intact.

The Stand – A have not read the book which is highly recommended by almost every reviewer and fan of Stephen King’s books. I cannot say I enjoyed the six hour long movie as it was hard to follow. I cannot imagine that the book could be that fragmented and somewhat tedious. Senior Doctor-at-Bass! D. A.
