I was honestly very disappointed in this book. I loved the concept of the story and the world that the author had created. However it felt less like I was reading a book and more like I was reading the script for a movie. The story is extremely fast paced and the author throws large chunks of exposition at you. Personally I prefer to learn about the history of a society over the course of a book, not in 3 paragraphs. But despite all of that, I think this would make a great movie.

This series is incredibly gripping!
I tried it out based on my enjoyment of the narrator on another title and ran through the series just as quick as I could.
The plot itself may not be entirely original, but it feels fresh and commits to strong characters with believable motivations that don’t feel shoe horned in.
I highly recommend this title.

There are so many YA books with the same formulaic writing- teenaged girl or boy hero, love interst, overcome odds, etc. Most are dull and predictable but this book has a rich full story line and a range of interesting characters. It ranks with Edner's Game as the best of books like this.

I highly recommend this book as an interesting blend of fantasy and science fiction. It loses momentum a bit half way through, but overall a very satisfying read. Excited for book 2 of the trilogy!

So I just devoured Red Rising over the course of a few hours, and man did this story draw me in. Pierce Brown did an amazing job of pacing the second half of this novel so that it was basically impossible for me to look away from my kindle, even to grab a coffee. The story was very compelling and the world-building was even better- I'm definitely going to be reading Golden Son as soon as my Overdrive hold comes in!

This book (the first in a trilogy) is truly wonderful if you love a good adventure with space as the backdrop. I felt it on par with Asimov in it's grand Empire, space tech and, of course, civil unrest. Where it departed from Asimov is giving the main characters more heart. You really come to care about the characters and want to see them succeed and flourish. As a YA novel, the characters are teens, but in an environment where people must grow up quickly, taking on the responsibilities of adults as an early age. Action packed and plot twists at every turn, a very difficult to put down read. There is quite a bit of "language", but if you've been in a high school lately, you'll find it the language of the time. Beyond that, this is an author you don't want to miss!

I read this book to fulfil the goal read a book that takes place on a differant planet. it is a combination of the book 1984 and hunger games. It does have a lot of vugalar language. (so fair warning) it is the start of a series, but could stand alone.

perfect novel for anyone that loves dystopian futures or sci-fi adventures. this thing needs to become a tv series on hbo because a feature length film wouldnt do it justice!

Its like the hunger games, mixed with game of thrones mixed with American assassin. Well that's the way I see it anyway.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first novel in the Red Rising trilogy. Fast paced and well written with a likeable and engaging central character "Darrow" in a distopian futuristic story of life on Mars. At 16 he has only ever known of a strict color-coded caste system and a hard life as a low caste 'Red' working in the mines, but is happy to obey the rules with the hope that one day his people's children will have better lives. When his wife is killed as a punishment for singing a freedom song, Darrow finds out that everything he knows is a lie and and he is determined to sacrifice anything in order honor his wife's vision and bring justice and freedom to his people.

This was an amazing story about a young man Darrow. He lives in a futuristic world where the human race has learned to live on other planets. To organize society, the people formed a hierarchy, with Reds at the bottom and Golds at the top. His wife ends up getting hung for singing a forbidden song. A rebellion begins and Darrow infiltrates the Gold's academy. He earns the top rank in his year there and gets close with the Arch Governor of Mars.
It was captivating and I think you should read this story :)

Darrow has the most dangerous job on Mars. He is the helldiver of Lycos, running the drill deep underground that mines Mars for valuable natural resources. Helldivers to not generally live long lives, like his father who died when he was a child. But Darrow has other plans, he is going to make something of himself, and his clan. But he can only rise so far, the caste system of society keeps his people down. They are Reds, deemed to be good at nothing but hard labor. They are ruled over by the Blues, Greys, and at the top...the Golds, the apex of human evolution.

To celebrate a particularly bountiful month in the mines, Darrow and his wife sneak off to see a big of the martian sky (a view not allowed to lowly Reds). Returning home they are caught and imprisoned for their crime. When their punishment, a whipping turns public, Eo sacrifices her life to speak out against the Golds and the caste system. She and Darrow are sentenced to die by hanging...Darrow's life is saved by the resistance movement, Eo's life is not.

The resistance tells Darrow they need him to overthrow the Golds, to prove that anyone has what it takes to be a Gold and that the colors mean nothing. Now that the Golds think he is dead, the plan is to teach Darrow to be one of them, to infiltrate their ranks, to push him into the highest ranks the government and military. Then to reveal his true origins and bring the system crashing down.

But first Darrow must survive the most grueling surgeries to remove his Red scars, a grueling initiation and finally the cruel war-games that constitute an entrance exam to the Gold academy. Can Darrow leave his old ways behind, sacrifice everything to avenge Eo?
