Smith takes a long forgotten incident from history to tell the story of 5 Gold Stars Mothers from World War I. When legislation is passed in 1929 to fund travel for these mothers to visit their fallen sons' graves in France, Cora Blake from a small island in Maine goes to Verdun, France in 1931. Party A, her designated small group, brings together 5 women of very disparate backgrounds. Their only connection is that all their sons served in the Yankee Division and are buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. As the women travel to France and back, the reader learns each one's background story and what brought them together for this trip. Although the author is very subtle in her portrayal of each woman's story, the reader becomes well aware of the class, racial, and ethnic differences among the small group and the people they encounter along the way. This novel is a fascinating glimpse into the aftermath of World War I and the hint of World War II.

I’m so glad I found this book. I listened to the story and enjoyed every bit of it. The reader was very easy to listen to which makes it much more enjoyable. I’d love to hear more about Cora, Sammy and Francois. I had never heard about this program of taking gold star mothers from WWI to France to see where their sons were killed. Doing so during the depression and on such a grand scale. I will remember the ladies of group A for a long time.
