No, no, and no!!! 2.5 stars only.
The movie has some great ideas, including that men become vampires and members of a Brethren, and women are soucriants and cannot join; the concept that to become a vampire a person must travel to the secret, nameless island with the waterfall, etc.
It is a disappointment that these complex themes and original ideas are lost within bad dialogue, plot inconsistencies, and under-developed characters. Too bad!!!

I thought this would be another average vampire movie. Not so.

A complex story which shifts from the present to the 18th century. The vampires are rather different than the ones we're so accustomed to.

Definitely worth seeing.

An elegant, highly British send-up of the vampire mythos, at moments pretty original, with plenty of heart & grit & those long, stern, silent moments vampires have about everything. The film glances past themes of patriarchy & female vengeance, assisted suicide, co-dependency, always very studied & character-driven, very modern in the telling. I like to see a *lot of liberty taken with the vampire style & storyline, & there were moments where this was still a little safe for my taste...but the set design alone is magnificent, the high school principal from "Step Up 2: The Streets" (also recommended!) appears in this, as the high school principal (for real!), & becoming a vampire is less like being seduced by a pale Christopher Walken type & more like going to a really remote, really jarring spiritual but not religious meditation retreat. Bonus material: heads will roll...! CR

While waiting for my hold for “Brooklyn” starring Saoirse Ronan, I decided to watch this film also starring Saoirse. She is pretty good in this film, which is a story about vampires, etc. Doing a little research on Saoirse, I learned how to pronounce her name. Guess and then go to Google. I suspect only 1 out of 100 or 1000 will get it right.

I enjoyed this despite a general aversion to the modern vampire genre.

A softly flowing storyline that gradually pulls the narrative threads together. Surreal and poetic.
Don't worry, there's enough blood. Just not buckets.

Creative and well crafted vampire movie that deserves to be better known.

Loved this. Slow start, but soon gets really intense. Really liked the contrast between the two leads.

this isn't really a horror movie so much as a vampire thriller, and if you take it as that, it's pretty good. it's never as lyrical as something like 'trouble every day' where claire denis slows everything down, but byzantium takes it's time to weave it's tale, only really picking up the pace towards the end. i liked it a lot, but if you're looking for gore, you won't find it here. this is more about family than fangs.

slow-paced, at times even a little boring, but some good cinematography and mildly interesting twist on the vampire story.
