Even if you already know how to cook, this book may provide additional information that you may not know, not to mention recipes at the end of each chapter. It is also an entertaining and appealing read by a local food writer & chef.

Wandering in a grocery store, Flinn voyeuristically peers into a stranger's shopping cart and is horrified to see piles of processed crazy, without any real food in sight. She decides then and there to teach a cooking school geared toward people lacking basic skills and knowledge, in order to equip them to make better decisions. There are lots of practical tips and tricks, and of course, a few recipes. It's a fun read as she describes the lessons and the participants.

I loved this book. It made me wish that I actually knew a chef that would have an affordable kitchen counter cooking school. One of the most interesting things to me, was the description of the salt taste testing. I also liked the discussion of the kitchen audit. They talked about checking the label and then actually measured the grams of sugar or salt that were in the packages.

I will probably read this book again.

Kitchen Counter Cooking School was just as entertaining and informative as The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry. Kathleen Flinn is a great talent and I'm sure that if her cooking is even half as good as her writing, the hapless kitchen newbies she took under her wing learned a great deal. This is much more than a mere autobiography. Much more than a mere instructional cooking book. Much more than mere foodporn. This book is for foodies and non-foodies alike. It's a wonderful read.

After observing a stranger's grocery cart packed with processed, ready-to-eat foods, Seattle's Kathleen Flinn (a graduate of Paris's Le Cordon Bleu) became concerned. And with good reason: since World War II, home cooks have grown dependent on the food industry's offerings of "convenience" foods, thus decreasing familiarity with whole foods and the techniques and utensils needed to prepare them. Furthermore, food television has turned cooking into a spectator sport, drawing people out of the kitchen and towards the couch.

But what to do about this trend? When Flinn happened upon an episode of TV's "What Not to Wear," she decided to adapt the premise and recruit a group of struggling home cooks, observe their kitchens and meal preparations, offer hands-on instruction and coaching and re-observe. This book documents her project and teaches many valuable lessons: how to stock a pantry; how to hold and use a knife; how to taste, including comparative tastings and suggested seasonings; how to bake simple bread and prepare eggs, whole chickens, fish and meats. Flinn writes fluently and accessibly, employing both humour and helpful instructions.

Though a couple of the book's chapters seem self-indulgent and irrelevant (like when she describes a teaching stint on a cruise ship), Flinn proves a supportive, entertaining and informative teacher. Ultimately, she inspires a respect for food, the true starting point to healthier living.

I love to cook from scratch and am generally fearless but have learned a couple of new techniques from this book. In addition it's a great read and very gratifying to hear about women feeling empowered about their food choices and abilities.

At first I was disappointed, having expected a lot of recipes and directions, but as I read on, I found it a really effective way of teaching someone how to cook in a healthy way. I am definitely buying a copy for myself.

I picked this book up not knowing that it was not a novel. I was pleasantly surprised. This book reads like a novel. The author is engaging. Bonus, there is lots to learn about cooking, even if you already know a lot. If you know nothing about cooking, there is a lot of very helpful hints and great recipes. I truly great read!!

This book is great for people who don't know how to cook and who would like to start with simple and basic things first. The author is quite funny. This is unlike any other cookbook I've ever seen. It seems like there's never a dull moment in the book and it "tricks" you into reading all the recipes because they're scattered around a book following each cooking lession. Besides recipes, detailed methods of preparing and cooking basic dishes are also buried into each chapter. The author also emphasized on using natural and organic food. This will be a good reference for those of us who are still learning. I will definitely buy this book.
