-a compelling read with many insights into Hollywood stars who used their celebrity to work for change. Ross is an intelligent writer and a gifted story-teller. The narrative alternates between actors on the right and the left of the political spectrum. It's a structure that took some getting used to, but, on the whole, it succeeds. Ross's own politics become evident. However, he achieves a remarkable balance. And the other important division he employs; between grass roots and movement activism is also helpful. Much to learn here about the history of the film industry in the U.S. and its overt and covert influence on American beliefs and attitudes. I'll be searching out his other book.
