Let me start out by saying I love the Mary Russell series! The past books have been an absolute joy to read! This one on the other hand started slow and proceeded in that way for much of the book. Though it had some interesting facts in some of the chapters it didn't start picking up speed until the last few chapters of the book, which is where those moments that make your heart pound just waiting to see how they'll wiggle out of this situation finally come about. So to end my opinion, it wasn't the best book I've read but it wasn't the worst.
I absolutely LOVED this book!! I have been reading the Mary Russell series, and this is the funniest, most exciting, and centered around Mary, rather than Sherlock. Highly recommended!
It’s 1924 and Mary Russell is on covert assignment for the British government to investigate criminal activity at the studio for a silent movie being made about the making of the Pirates of Penzance film – sheer fun! Audiobooks in the series are joyously read with an authentic English accent by Jenny Sterlin.
I came to love this book, although in the beginning it seems a lot to keep track of for an unclear purpose. Quickly decided just to trust King and keep reading. I was very glad I did. As bonus, I learned something about the making of silent films, as well as about a part of the world of which I'd known almost nothing.
Lighthearted and worthwhile... but slightly dull without the presence of Holmes. Additionally, it seemed sort of aimless. Lots of filler time where Russell sort of just sat around and read various letters of sorts. Don't worry, my friends; Garment of Shadows will meet your expectations.
I've read the entire series and loved it, but this book was vastly inferior to the rest.
Fun read, but I miss the previous setup of Russell and Holmes working together.
Not the best in this series. Somewhat confusing and at the same time tedious!
Too many characters. I couldn't get interested.
I have enjoyed all the previous books in this series, but this one is BORING. Everlasting conversation and arguments, and no action as far as I read before I gave up on it.
