This story concocted for this production is musicologically incorrect (but, the fact that The Barber of Seville and William Tell were separated by 13 years is correct). The fiasco of the première of The Barber of Seville didn't happen like this at all in terms of the names of persons involved (it was a senior rival composer named Giovanni Paisiello, who wrote an opera using the same story long before Rossini came to write his). The facts are too well-known for me to go into. Those who are not in the know wouldn't have too much trouble finding the right information, even if a little help is required. Also, making Rossini look like someone who's just starting out runs foul against facts, grossly so. By the time he was writing The Barber of Seville, he was already celebrated and rich, with a good number of widely acknowledged masterpieces under his belt. He had more than enough experiences by then to give all other operatic composers of his time sage advice! And, this is putting it mildly! Apropos the film, the involvement of a ghost figure in the scenario is just too much for the musicologically and historically sensitive. However, all that said, it is a very lovely story. It teaches all of us how to deal with adversities as well as difficult yet worthy friendships. As for the musical performances (i.e. in the soundtrack section of the DVD), they are cultured, stylish and alert. As for the overture to La Cenerentola, the edition they used isn't urtext.
