Directed and produced by Mel Gibson, this is a 2006 American epic adventure-survival drama.
Although all dialogue is in a modern approximation of the ancient Mayan language, all the scenes appear to the eyes of the modern men like genuine actions and scenery.
Set in pre-Columbian Yucatan and Guatemala around the year 1511, the film depicts the journey of a Mesoamerican tribesman who must escape human sacrifice and rescue his family after the capture and destruction of his village at a time when the Mayan civilization is about to come to an end.
It is a profoundly fascinating and edge-at-your-seat epic you would love to see it twice if not thrice.

A cinematic tour-de-force. Truly an amazing bit of film-making. Kudos to Gibson and everyone involved. Intense, nasty, violent, heart-wrenching, and swiftly paced, this movie is a must-see. It deals with mature themes and is quite gory (but suitable for the subject matter, time period, and culture). Not recommended for those under 16.

I just saw this with a friend yesterday and sheesh, what helluva ride. Leave it to Mel Gibson to give you a nail bitter...And a gore fest. Everything about this film was amazing. The acting was GREAT, the cinematography was really good and the story was intriguing. Beware though, there is graphic violence aplenty. However, the captivating story makes up any dislike the squeamish might have.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Lots. Extreme violence, murder, execution, and gore. Not suitable for youngsters or those who don't like such content.

Sexual Content: Nudity and sexual suggestion.

Violence: Extreme violence, murder, execution, and gore. Given the subject matter, time, and place, I would not consider it sensational but suitable to the storytelling.

Violence: EXTREME 10/10 Very graphic, gory and disturbing violence. The worst scene is when a man has his heart ripped out (we see it still beating in another man's fist) than his head severed. Very gory.

Old Story Teller: "And a Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said, "We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it." The Man said, "I want to have good sight." The vulture replied, "You shall have mine." The Man said, "I want to be strong." The jaguar said, "You shall be strong like me." Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth." The serpent replied, "I will show them to you." And so it went with all the animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he left." (cont'd)

Old Story Teller (cont'd): "...Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much, he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid." The deer said, "The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop." But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give.' "
